The Iraq war has already cost America the lives of over 4,000 soldiers and severely injured more than 28,000 other service members. It shows no signs of slowing down, which means higher death tolls and a cost nearing $1 trillion. Dr. Michael Babula has always been opposed to the Iraq war and if elected he will remove the troops from Iraq as soon as possible.
American politicians failed to analyze the effects of sending our troops into the Middle East and did not realize the consequences. The Sunni vs. Shiite battle that is taking place in Iraq is really a war between extremist groups in Saudi Arabia and Iran. The policies of throwing money at these groups will not help the situation and it is extremely difficult to end a religiously motivated war. Dr. Babula believes the legislative and executive branches of government should completely rethink Middle East policy. Democracy and free enterprise go together. He has never accepted free interest money and has opposed the war since its start.
His opponents, Donna Edwards and Albert Wynn, are hypocrites when it comes to the Iraq war. Teitelbaum at CQ Politics states, “‘Arca Foundation, where Edwards is executive director, holds $1.8 million in investments in multi-national oil and gas companies including almost $1 million in investments in Exxon-Mobil and Halliburton’” (http://cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?parm1=5&docID=news-000002652921). These corporations are closely tied to the invasion of Iraq. Wynn was adamant about using force in Iraq and voted to do so. Neither Edwards nor Wynn would help the United States’ stand in Iraq and their elections would simply lead to more chaos and death. Their websites fail to mention this.
In summary, Dr. Babula has always been strongly opposed to the Iraq war and if elected will take the necessary steps to get our troops out. He will request that the United States stop financing military equipment for the Saudi Arabian regime, and instead, shift financial resources toward pro-democracy forces within these nations. With this, the United States will be on its way toward worldwide democracy and peace, and toward ending the Iraq war.
